Ahead of the Curve: A New Generation of Cosmetic Treatments

There’s a new wave of cosmetic treatments that can help you achieve healthier, rejuvenated skin — without surgery. Each one is safe, minimally invasive and has a low risk of side effects. Some encourage your body to help with the rejuvenating process — forming fat for areas that have experienced volume loss or using your blood to create a natural filler. One treatment even melts away fat that can cause under-eye inflammation.

These four treatments are expanding the menu of non-invasive cosmetic procedures that will make you love your skin even more.

Boost the Body’s Healing

Exosome therapy is a new alternative to Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) treatment, typically chosen to promote wound-healing, skin rejuvenation and heal acne scarring. Whereas PRP requires a blood draw, this new therapy is less invasive and uses highly concentrated exosomes derived from plant or healthy donor stem cells to carry proteins and genetic material from one cell to another, aiding in cell communication and regeneration. Through a recent clinical study on exosome therapy, Schweiger Dermatology Group’s Director of the Clinical Research Department, Dr. David Goldberg found, “Exosomes promote healing, lead to anti-aging of skin and promote hair growth. They do the same thing as PRP for these purposes, but do not require a blood draw.” Dr. Goldberg’s clinical trial determined, “Exosomes produced slightly better cosmetic improvement than PRP.”

Takeaway: Use to stimulate collagen production for firmer, more youthful skin; reduce fine lines, wrinkles and pigmentation; accelerate healing and hair growth; and enhance skin texture, elasticity and hydration.

Bring Back the Fat

Producing fat isn’t often considered a positive. Except with a treatment like Renuva, a new filler that allows our bodies to form fat for areas that have experienced age-related volume loss, particularly in the face and hands. This injectable is comprised of collagen, proteins and growth factors derived from donated and purified fat. Once injected, it triggers your body’s own fat production. New blood vessels and fat cell formation restore the volume to the targeted area. Results can take several months to appear, but last much longer (often for years more) than traditional hyaluronic acid fillers.

Takeaway: Use to treat the temples, cheeks, nasolabial folds and the neck but also helpful for erasing cellulite dimples, smoothing liposuction irregularities and flattening depressed scars.

Melt Away Bags

Until now, the only way to erase under eye bags has been surgery. Agnes Radiofrequency (Agnes RF) is the first device that can melt under-eye fat pads without going under the knife. “With the hundreds of energy-based devices that we’ve seen developed over the last 30 years that do everything for the skin, we’ve had no way to treat fat bags below the eyes until now,” says Dr. Goldberg. Originally created to target active acne, Agnes RF has shown its power for contouring the face, jaw and eye area by combining microneedling and radiofrequency, which helps stimulate fibroblasts and generate collagen. And it’s fast: The treatment takes 10 minutes and requires only one to three procedures, six to eight weeks apart, to see results.

Takeaway: Use to address sagging skin and jowls; under-eye bags; the entire eye area; scars; and enlarged pores. The results are said to be comparable to a surgical eye or face lift.

Keep It Natural

For patients who lean into clean, all-natural modalities, Cellenis® Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is chemical-free. “Other fillers, like Juvederm and Restylane, are made from artificial substances, but Cellenis uses our own PRP that’s converted into an all-natural filler, so no allergic reactions and no foreign substances,” notes Dr. Goldberg. The technology removes the Platelet Poor Plasma (PPP) from the blood, collects the PRP and applies it to the treated area. It increases the skin’s supply of nourishing blood, stimulates oil glands and new fibrocytes to produce more skin firming collagen, and stimulate growth of new skin cells to thicken and smooth the skin. This happens because growth factors are released by the platelets providing an improvement in the skin’s texture and tone.

Takeaway: Use for sun-damaged skin; acne scars; stretch marks; skin texture and tone; hair loss; to restore moisture and glow; refine fine lines; and address dark circles under the eyes.
