KTP Laser Treatment

While many people look for solutions to get rid of their breakouts for good, others are looking to clear their skin of red lesions and acne scars. One of those therapy solutions for facial redness is the KTP laser, which can treat a variety of skin conditions. At Schweiger Dermatology Group, we harness the power of the KTP laser’s light wavelength, to help you achieve a more even, rejuvenated complexion.

What Is the KTP Laser?

KTP (potassium-titanyl-phosphate) laser devices utilize a unique green light wavelength at 532 nometers (nm). This wavelength interacts with chromophores, which are the molecules within the skin that absorb and reflect light. By targeting chromophores like hemoglobin and melanin (which causes hyperpigmentation), the KTP laser can treat red lesions, including acne scars.

Green Light Therapy for Skin

Green light therapy uses light at a wavelength in the lower to mid-500s nm to target the cells in the body and encourage them to heal. It’s known to help boost collagen production and reduce inflammation, both of which are important for those who are dealing with acne, redness, and skin irritation.

Green light is more beneficial for redness than other laser treatments such as red light therapy and fractional lasers because it targets the blood vessels themselves which are the primary contributor to red discoloration over the individual lesions.

How Lasers for Facial Redness Work

KTP lasers for facial redness work by targeting the small blood vessels under the skin in trouble areas. The laser causes the small blood vessels to collapse, which helps the redness fade away. It also uses green light to target melanin which can treat hyperpigmentation which can result from conditions like cystic acne. Targeting the redness in blood vessels also helps to treat port wine stains and angiomas. Some conditions can see good results in one session, but others may need three to four visits for the best results.

Laser KTP for Red Acne Scars

Like other conditions that can cause redness, some acne scars can leave behind red, irritated, and discolored areas on the skin. KTP laser treatment reduces the appearance of red acne scars by shrinking the red blood vessels near the surface of the skin. For severe cases, individuals may need up to four treatments to experience a significant change in red marks.

KTP Laser Procedure

KTP laser resurfacing is a non-invasive, non-ablative laser facial redness treatment. Patients often describe the feeling of the KTP laser as a sensation similar to a rubber band snapping against the skin with each pulse. During the procedure, patients may experience a slight warming sensation or mild discomfort, but it’s well-tolerated by many.

The average session lasts 15 to 45 minutes depending on the size of the area being treated. Before scheduling the first session, a dermatology specialist will conduct a skin exam to determine if the KTP laser is the right choice for your needs.

Preparation

Little preparation is necessary before the KTP laser procedure. It’s important to come to the session with a clean face free of makeup and other skincare products. Goggles will be provided to wear during the treatment.

Healing

Immediately following the laser application, the treated area may appear red and swollen, which is a normal reaction. To soothe the skin and reduce these symptoms, a cool pack is often applied to the treated area. Luckily, there is minimal downtime, so those with a busy schedule won’t need to miss school, work, or other activities.

However, avoid scrubbing the skin and excessive sun exposure in the first 48 to 72 hours to prevent inflammation and pigmentation issues. In rare cases, the skin may lose pigment or experience increased hyperpigmentation. If this occurs, alert your dermatology provider as soon as possible.

KTP Laser Treatment Cost

The cost of a KTP laser session can vary, ranging from $385 to $1200 or more depending on the size of the scar or lesion and the severity of the skin issue. Typically, the therapy isn’t covered by insurance as it treats cosmetic concerns rather than medical skin conditions that may need the treatment out of necessity. Keep in mind, this is one of the more affordable laser treatments for acne scarring and redness, but it doesn’t treat acne itself.

Benefits of KTP Laser Treatment

KTP laser resurfacing works quickly and has several benefits. There is minimal downtime, and patients only experience mild discomfort. Other benefits of KTP laser include minimal swelling, no needles, and ultimate precision for small lesions to not damage surrounding skin. With good sun protection techniques and skin care, this treatment can be semi-permanent.
