Cold Sores
At Schweiger Dermatology Group, we employ quick, effective, and painless treatments for cold sores. Cold sores can make people feel uncomfortable, insecure, and embarrassed. Our goal is to make patients feel better about their appearances and be more self-assured.
Cold sores start as fever blisters generally around the mouth and can be pretty painful. If you have a history of cold sores, you should consult with one of our board-certified dermatology providers.
Causes of Cold Sores
Cold sores are commonly known as fever blisters or herpes simplex labialis. Cold sores are caused by certain strains of the herpes simplex virus (HSV-1 or HSV-2).
Symptoms of Cold Sores
Cold sores usually manifest as a group of tiny, painful blisters on the outside of your mouth and lips and sometimes on your nose and cheeks.
The first cold sore outbreak or attack is usually the worst. First-time infections can also cause:
- Burning and pain inside your mouth
- Sore throat
- Pain when swallowing
- Headache
- Upset stomach
After the first occurrence, your body will be triggered to manufacture antibodies to deal with cold sore outbreaks. Some people, fortunately, may never have another cold sore, while others may have recurring outbreaks following the first occurrence.
Preventing Cold Sores from Spreading
Cold sores are highly contagious. Cold sores can spread through kissing, sharing of utensils, towels, razors, and even lip balm. Protect yourself and others (if you have the virus) by not spreading the virus when you have an outbreak.
The most critical aspect of controlling the spread of cold sores is ensuring that you do not touch the affected area often. Thoroughly washing your hands can help prevent the virus from spreading to other areas of your body or to others.
Treatment for Cold Sores
Unfortunately, there is no cure for cold sores, and they can flare up at the most inopportune times. Once you have the virus, it stays in your body. However, it is possible to treat the uncomfortable symptoms of cold sores to keep the condition under control.
At Schweiger Dermatology Group, we offer several treatment options to soothe symptoms stemming from the herpes simplex virus—either HSV-1 or HSV-2. We have a variety of ways to treat such outbreaks, both topically and orally. One of our board-certified dermatology providers will review your case and determine the best course of action for treating your cold sores.
Treatment can include:
- Topical creams to apply directly on the sores
- Pills that you swallow
- Intravenous medicines if you have a severe case
