Lighten Up: New Natural Ingredients to Treat Hyperpigmentation

News from the annual AAD conference will lighten up the moods of those suffering from hyperpigmentation. If you have hyperpigmentation, which appears on the skin as a darkened splotches, chances are you’ve tried makeup and other products to try and reduce its appearance. Hydroquinone has long been known as the gold standard topical ingredient in treating hyperpigmentaion, but its also a controversial ingredient. Thankfully, there are some new proven topical ingredients that are both natural and effective in treating hyperpigmentation, which can form as a result of melasma, acne, eczema, psoriasis or sun damage.

In a report from the AAD conference, the skin-lightening ingredients showing results–and safety–include kojic acid, arbutin, niacinimide, ellagic acid, soy and licorice. All of these ingredients have shown improvement in skin lightening. This is great news for those of us with pigmentation issues who would rather not use hydroquinone. As always, the best way to fight hyperpigmentation and to ensure all of your skincare products are working their best is to use SPF 30 on a daily basis.
